On Sunday D, our friends Keith and Derrick and I headed to the Burlington Waterfront for the Fourth Annual Giant Pumpkin Regetta. It also happened to be Keith’s birthday and the last time we’ll get to hang out before he moves to Florida in two week, so we made sure to take full advantage of the beautiful sunny weather and fall fun. …and they’re off! In case you were at all confused by the event’s title, the Giant Pumpkin Regetta is indeed an event where giant (1,000 lbs +) pumpkins are hollowed out and turned into lake worthy vessels made for racing. This year the competitors were blessed with beautiful weather with temperatures reaching almost 80!The Ben & Jerry’s pumpkin paddler.
The Giant Pumpkin Regetta is one of my favorite fall events in Burlington and each year the crowd it draws gets bigger and bigger. The regetta usually falls on my friend Keith’s birthday which is funny because he’s the one who first introduced me to this wonderful event. This year Keith and his friend Derrick made the almost 7 hour trek from New Jersey to Burlington to join in on the fun.
Watching people try to navigate the chilly waters of Lake Champlain in a giant pumpkin with a kayak paddle is a pretty wild site. While the competition heats up on the water there’s plenty of local fall foods to sample and kid centric activities taking place on land to keep the whole family happy. The fun and games have a more serious purpose though, raising money for the Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce and Linking Learning to Living’s youth leadership program PILOT.
How did you enjoy the sunny weekend weather? What fall events do you most look forward to?
