Burlington City Marathon Love

Mac is wearing: J Crew shorts and tee with converse high tops Rebecca is wearing: J Crew scarf, sandals, & top with a Gap maxi skirtReady to run!

After weeks of training my good friends Mac and Rebecca are running the Burlington City Marathon. D and I are going to try and set up a cheering section for these guys somewhere along the Bikepath.

The best part is we’ll be able to track Mac and Rebecca as they run the course and so can you! Simply visit this website and enter the name or bib number of the race participant you want to track. Mac’s wearing bib #2482 and Rebecca is bib #2477.

Good luck to all of the athletes participating in this weekend’s events and have a wonderful weekend!

In Motion with Caity Patey

Helmet: Lazer O2 helmet, Jersey & Shorts: Craft, Specialized Touring Shoes, Socks: Darn Tough (VT Made!), Bike: Specialized Defy 3This picture perfectly captures my friend Caity Patey. She’s constantly in motion, most likely outdoors and always smiling. Caity’s love for the outdoors is rivaled only by her commitment to community service and this summer with Bike & Build she’ll be able to combine the two.

Leaving from Portsmouth, NH this June Caity and the Bike & Build team will ride across the country, stopping along the way to lend a hand on a number of affordable housing projects, eventually ending their journey in Vancouver, BC in August. Yup not only is Caity riding across the country (4,000 miles!) but along the way she’ll be working with organizations like Habitat for Humanity to make affordable housing a reality for more Americans.

The Important Part: Caity can’t take her first pedal stroke without you! Before she pedals off in June Caity needs to meet her fundraising goal. The money raised by each Bike & Build rider goes towards grants for affordable housing organizations and helps makes trip like Caity’s possible.

This is where you my wonderful readers come in. All I ask is that you visit Caity’s Bike & Build page and give what you can. After you give be sure and leave a comment below with your email address. It doesn’t matter if you give $1 or $100, everyone who donates will receive a little thank you gift!

Thank you in advance and “Ride Strong”!

Wordless Wednesday… but with words

A tip from Lucy Dog: Life’s too short to miss out on sunny days.

An Unexpected Outfit Post

The sun came out over Lake Champlain for a few precious moments yesterday afternoon creating a truly stunning scene. My favorite college professor once referred to these rays of light as “sun-dogs,” just saying it makes me smile.

Glasses: Eyefly, Necklace: Arizona, Cardigan/Wrap: Charlotte Ruse, Skinny Belt: Forever 21, Top: ?, Jeans: Hurley, Ruffle Flats: Target, Bracelets: Gifted, Lipstick: Revlon Strawberry Suede I wasn’t planning on taking outfit photos yesterday (my outfit was planned around my insane work day, not my fav fashions) but with at least half a dozen people snapping photos of the sun-dogs as well I figured it wouldn’t be hard to have someone snap a few of me. I took a chance and asked a much more stylishly dressed lady, she graciously agreed and after giving her my card (to prove I wasn’t a total loon) she took these.

I’m not wearing my “real” shoes (I left those under my desk so they wouldn’t get muddy) and I don’t like how wide my belted wrap makes me look but I decided to share these pictures with you anyway. Not every outfit is a winner and sometimes life prevents us from putting our most fashionable foot forward and that’s fine. What’s important is that you feel confident no matter what you have on; and while I’d be lying if I said I felt like a million bucks in this outfit I was so busy yesterday that I didn’t have a moment to worry about it!

Here’s my question to you readers (thanks for reading by the way); in the future should I skip sharing these less than inspiring/fashionable outfit photos with you?

Frozen Fields

Sunnies: Downtown Threads, Sweater: Bought/Made in Ireland,  Button-Up: Goodwill, Belt: via Quarter Life Vintage, Leggings: Target, Boots: BlowfishThis past Saturday D and I spent the day in Orwell, Vermont visiting his parents and enjoying an unseasonably warm January day. I love the drive to D’s parent’s house; the further you get from Burlington the more rural and open the landscape becomes until it’s just rolling green hills on both sides of you with the mountains and lake in the distance.

I kept things comfortable and casual for our weekend adventure with the handmade sweater I picked up in Ireland, my favorite chambray shirt and leggings. I was surprised how well my boots did considering D and I spent the afternoon tromping through the woods before the sun magically came out and we ran for the nearest clearing, a neighbor’s corn field.

What comfortable/casual pieces do you swear by?

Apple Picking Adventure

Sunnies: Zinnia, Button-up: Walmart, White Tank: Charlotte Ruse, Necklace: Gifted, Leggings: Target, Boots: Old Gold, Bag: H&M

I took these photos when D and I headed to Chapin Orchard in Essex, Vermont for an afternoon of apple picking. Apple picking was and still is a fall tradition in my family. In fact while D and I were picking apples in Vermont my parents were doing the same thing in Maine with my older sister and her daughter.

It was our first time visiting Chapin Orchard, which was so beautiful, and the weather made it particularly wonderful to be outside. We got there a little after noon and when we left around 3 the orchard was bustling with people. About a week before we went, there was a Living Social Deal for a half a bushel of apples and half a a gallon of cider for $10, instead of the usual $20. So not only did we get ah-mazing weather but we also got a great deal.

Since I knew we were going to be mucking about in the orchard I wore my rodeo boots (seen here & here) perfect for fall and in this case practical too. I kept the rest of my outfit really casual and comfortable; somewhere along the line leggings, a tee, and an oversized button up became my weekend wear… and I’m alright with that.

What are some of your fall traditions? What’s your weekend wardrobe?

Grow-It & Row-It; The 4th Annual Giant Pumpkin Regetta

On Sunday D, our friends Keith and Derrick and I headed to the Burlington Waterfront for the Fourth Annual Giant Pumpkin Regetta. It also happened to be Keith’s birthday and the last time we’ll get to hang out before he moves to Florida in two week, so we made sure to take full advantage of the beautiful sunny weather and fall fun. …and they’re off! In case you were at all confused by the event’s title, the Giant Pumpkin Regetta is indeed an event where giant (1,000 lbs +) pumpkins are hollowed out and turned into lake worthy vessels made for racing. This year the competitors were blessed with beautiful weather with temperatures reaching almost 80!The Ben & Jerry’s pumpkin paddler.

The Giant Pumpkin Regetta is one of my favorite fall events in Burlington and each year the crowd it draws gets bigger and bigger. The regetta usually falls on my friend Keith’s birthday which is funny because he’s the one who first introduced me to this wonderful event. This year Keith and his friend Derrick made the almost 7 hour trek from New Jersey to Burlington to join in on the fun.

Watching people try to navigate the chilly waters of Lake Champlain in a giant pumpkin with a kayak paddle is a pretty wild site. While the competition heats up on the water there’s plenty of local fall foods to sample and kid centric activities taking place on land to keep the whole family happy. The fun and games have a more serious purpose though, raising money for the Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce and Linking Learning to Living’s youth leadership program PILOT.

How did you enjoy the sunny weekend weather? What fall events do you most look forward to?

Fall Flavors at Speeder & Earl’s

When a fall chill creeps into the air I look forward to shrugging into cozy knits, classic leather boots and colorful scarves. The arrival of fall doesn’t just call for new fashions but also new flavors. I headed to Speeder & Earl’s, a local Burlington coffee shop, to talk fall flavors, perfect pixie cuts and why local is always better with Emma, one of Speeder’s uber stylish baristas. On the particularly chilly Friday morning I spent with Emma, I was impressed with the level of customer service that is standard practice at Speeder & Earl’s. Emma not only greeted the majority of the customers by name but remembered the orders of almost all the repeat customers. “We’re all repeat customers,” explained Emma. “Even if they’re not a local or don’t come in every day, people can come back in and finish the conversations they started the last time they were here.”

Being a small locally owned business allows Speeder & Earl’s to cater to their customer’s seasonal flavor desires. In the summer months Speeder’s keeps at least three different flavors of ice tea in their coolers and plenty of freshly brewed iced coffee at the ready. When fall rolls around Speeder’s replaces one of their ice teas with local cider from Champlain Orchards and updates their chic specials board with other seasonal favorites. Speeder & Earl’s special board, perfectly depicting the blustery fall conditions in BurlingtonA cup of fall flavors, Speeder & Earl’s steamed cider and mulling spices

Before I’m done admiring her new pixie cut Emma appears with a steaming cup of local cider, perfectly capturing all my favorite fall flavors.  “We steam Champlain Orchard’s cider with these delicious mulling spices, it’s just really warm and inviting,” Emma explained. Inviting was the perfect word to describe this fragrant spiced treat. Not only did it totally take the chill of the day away but it was lite and caffeine free making it a perfect post work pick me up.

The next fall treat Emma whipped up was Speeder’s signature, A Clockwork Orange. According to Emma as soon as it starts to cool off this becomes one of the most popular specialty drinks at Speeder’s.

Emma adding the finishing touches to Speeder’s A Clockwork Orange

To create this fall favorite Emma, pours freshly brewed espresso over an orange peel to “release the essential oils and make it really fragrant.” Then she adds delicious almond flavor, dark Ghirardelli hot chocolate and whipped cream to create the perfect marriage of summer sweetness and warm fall flavors. The next time you can’t shake the stress of your day or the chill of the fall air, stop into Speeder and Earl’s and treat yourself to one of these.

Speeder and Earl’s is a perfect example of why keeping your dollars local just makes sense. All of their coffee is roasted locally in small batches at their Pine Street location right in Burlington and believe me you can taste the difference. The care that Speeder & Earl’s puts into their coffee extends to their customer service ten fold. Just stop into either their Pine Street or Church Street locations and see what I mean. Whether you try one of Speeder & Earl’s specialty drinks or opt for a cup of their perfectly brewed drip coffee you wont leave disappointed.

What are some of your favorite fall flavors? Where do you get your caffeine kick from?
